Can You Install Epoxy Garage Flooring in Winter in the Bay Area?
If you have been putting off your garage epoxy flooring project because winter is approaching, here is the good news: the Bay Area is one of the best places in the country for year-round epoxy installation. At Brooks & Company Epoxy, we work through every season across Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose, Fremont, Hayward, and the entire Bay Area without compromising quality.
Winter epoxy installation is not just possible here. In many ways, it is actually advantageous. Let us walk through the details.
Bay Area Winter Temperatures: Perfect for Epoxy
Epoxy coatings and polyaspartic topcoats cure best when ambient and surface temperatures are between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Here is what a typical Bay Area winter looks like:
- Oakland: Highs of 57 to 60 degrees, lows of 42 to 45 degrees
- San Francisco: Highs of 55 to 58 degrees, lows of 45 to 48 degrees
- San Jose: Highs of 58 to 62 degrees, lows of 40 to 43 degrees
- Berkeley: Highs of 56 to 59 degrees, lows of 43 to 46 degrees
- Fremont: Highs of 58 to 61 degrees, lows of 40 to 44 degrees
During daytime hours when we perform installations, garage temperatures consistently stay within the ideal curing window. Compare this to the Midwest or Northeast where winter temperatures plunge below freezing for months. Homeowners in those regions genuinely cannot install epoxy in winter. Bay Area homeowners do not have that problem.
Even on the coldest Bay Area mornings, a closed garage retains enough thermal mass from the slab and surrounding structure to stay well above minimum curing temperatures by mid-morning.
The Real Winter Concern: Moisture Management
Temperature is rarely an issue for Bay Area winter installations. Moisture is the factor that requires attention. The rainy season runs roughly from November through March, and moisture affects epoxy adhesion in two distinct ways.
Surface Moisture
The concrete slab must be dry before epoxy application. If rain has been blowing into your garage through an open door, or if water pools near the garage entrance during storms, the surface needs time to dry. We require at least 48 hours of dry conditions before beginning work.
Subsurface Moisture Vapor
During extended rainy periods, water can migrate upward through the concrete slab via capillary action. This moisture vapor transmission can prevent epoxy from bonding to the concrete. Before every installation, regardless of season, we perform a calcium chloride moisture test to verify conditions are suitable.
If moisture levels exceed acceptable thresholds, we will recommend waiting for a dry window rather than risk a subpar result. We would rather reschedule than install a floor that will not perform.
How Brooks & Company Handles Winter Jobs
Our winter installation process accounts for every seasonal variable:
Weather window planning. We monitor forecasts closely and schedule installations during dry stretches between rain systems. The Bay Area reliably provides multi-day dry windows even during the wettest months. The garage provides shelter during application, but we need dry conditions through the 24-hour foot traffic cure and 72-hour vehicle cure.
Comprehensive moisture testing. Every job starts with moisture testing at no extra charge. In winter, we pay extra attention to readings near the garage entrance and any areas where water may have contacted the slab.
Temperature monitoring. If a cold morning puts the garage below 50 degrees, we start slightly later in the day or use portable heaters to bring the space into range. This is standard practice for experienced installers.
Extended cure guidance. Cooler temperatures slow the curing process slightly. While our standard recommendation is 24 hours for foot traffic and 72 hours for vehicles, we may advise an additional 12 to 24 hours during cold stretches to ensure full hardness.
Why Winter Is Actually a Great Time to Book
There are real advantages to scheduling your epoxy project during the cooler months:
Shorter wait times. Spring and summer are peak season. Booking in winter means faster scheduling and more flexibility on dates.
Better working conditions. Our crews prefer moderate temperatures. Summer heat can make garages uncomfortable and can rush cure times. Winter's cooler conditions allow careful, quality-focused work.
Ready for spring. A January or February installation means your garage is finished and fully cured before warm weather arrives. You will have a beautiful, high-performance floor ready for weekend projects and car shows.
Winter Pricing: No Surcharges
Our pricing stays the same year-round with no seasonal markups:
- One-Car Garage: $2,800 total ($1,400 deposit)
- Two-Car Garage: $4,000 total ($2,000 deposit)
We also offer metallic flooring at $10 per square foot with a 50% deposit and countertop epoxy starting at $1,000 to $2,500 with a $500 flat deposit.
