Metallic Epoxy Before & After: Stunning Bay Area Transformations
Nothing communicates the impact of metallic epoxy flooring like a real before-and-after story. Photographs can hint at the three-dimensional depth, the pearlescent shimmer, and the way light dances across the surface --- but even photos only capture a fraction of the experience. What they do show clearly is the dramatic gulf between bare, aging concrete and a finished metallic epoxy floor.
At Brooks & Company Epoxy, we have transformed hundreds of concrete floors across the Bay Area. Here are four recent project stories that illustrate what is possible when you invest in professional metallic epoxy flooring.
Project 1: Oakland Living Room --- Silver and Gray Blend
Location: Temescal neighborhood, Oakland Space: Open-concept living room Size: 350 square feet Colors: Silver and charcoal gray multi-color pour Cost: $3,500 ($10/sqft)
The Before
This 1940s Oakland bungalow had been updated throughout --- new kitchen, remodeled bathroom, fresh paint --- but the living room floor was the weakest link. The original hardwood had been damaged beyond reasonable repair by decades of use, a previous owner's failed refinishing attempt, and water damage near the front entry. The homeowner had pulled up the ruined hardwood to reveal the concrete slab underneath: gray, cold, patched in several places where old plumbing had been rerouted, and stained with adhesive residue from carpet that had been installed and later removed.
The concrete was structurally sound but visually depressing. The homeowner considered luxury vinyl plank but wanted something that would genuinely transform the room rather than simply cover the problem.
The Transformation
We diamond-ground the entire slab to remove adhesive residue and create a proper bonding profile. Plumbing patches and hairline cracks were filled and leveled. After priming, we poured a silver and charcoal gray metallic blend that the homeowner selected during our on-site color consultation.
The installer manipulated the two metallic pigments to create sweeping, cloud-like patterns with dramatic depth variation. Under the living room's large front windows, the silver catches natural daylight and glows. In the evening under warm LED lighting, the charcoal tones emerge and create a sophisticated, moody atmosphere.
The After
The living room went from the most neglected room in the house to the showpiece. The homeowner told us guests now comment on the floor before noticing anything else in the room. The seamless, reflective surface also made the 350-square-foot space feel noticeably larger and brighter. Project 2: Berkeley Retail Boutique --- Pearl White
Location: Fourth Street shopping district, Berkeley Space: Women's clothing and accessories boutique Size: 500 square feet Colors: Pearl white with subtle champagne accents Cost: $5,000 ($10/sqft)
The Before
This boutique retail space had been through multiple tenants over the years, and the floor showed it. Layers of old adhesive from previous vinyl flooring, scuffed and stained concrete in the high-traffic center aisle, and remnants of a painted floor treatment that had worn through unevenly. The new boutique owner had invested heavily in fixtures, lighting, and inventory but the floor undermined the premium brand she was building.
The existing concrete had several cracks running across the main retail floor and visible patches near the back where plumbing and electrical work had been done during the tenant improvement.
The Transformation
After removing all adhesive and old coating residue with diamond grinding, we repaired every crack and patch to create a perfectly smooth canvas. The boutique owner chose pearl white as the primary color with subtle champagne accents blended in during the pour. We applied a textured topcoat additive in the entryway and around the checkout counter where foot traffic would be heaviest and occasional wet shoes from Berkeley rain could create slip risk.
The After
The boutique now has a floor that looks like it belongs in a high-end San Francisco gallery. The pearl white surface amplifies the carefully designed track lighting, making merchandise look its best. The owner reported that customers regularly compliment the space and ask about the flooring. She told us the floor has become a genuine part of her brand --- it communicates the quality and taste that her clothing line represents. Project 3: San Jose Basement --- Ocean Blue
Location: Willow Glen neighborhood, San Jose Space: Full basement converted to entertainment room Size: 600 square feet Colors: Ocean blue with silver veining Cost: $6,000 ($10/sqft)
The Before
This San Jose family had a 600-square-foot basement that served as a catch-all storage space. The concrete floor was bare, cold, and slightly damp-feeling year-round. There were visible efflorescence stains (white mineral deposits) where moisture had wicked through the slab, and a long crack ran diagonally across the northwest corner. Previous attempts to make the space livable included a section of indoor-outdoor carpet that had developed a musty smell and was pulled up, leaving adhesive residue across half the floor.
The family wanted to convert the basement into an entertainment room with a home theater area, a small bar, and a game space for their teenagers. But nothing they envisioned would work with a floor that looked and felt like an unfinished utility room.
The Transformation
Moisture testing confirmed moderate vapor transmission through the slab, so we applied a moisture mitigation primer before the standard epoxy primer. All cracks were routed, filled, and sealed. Adhesive residue was completely removed during diamond grinding. The efflorescence stains disappeared with the grinding process.
The family chose ocean blue as the primary color with silver metallic veining throughout. The installer created dramatic flowing patterns that give the floor a sense of depth and movement --- like looking into the ocean from above. The deep blue tones work beautifully in a basement setting because they create atmosphere and character in a space that lacks the natural light advantages of above-grade rooms.
The After
The basement is now the family's favorite room in the house. The ocean blue metallic floor transformed the atmosphere from cold storage to a premium entertainment space. Under the recessed LED lighting the family installed, the metallic pigments shift between deep blue and bright silver as you walk across the room. The bar area, home theater, and game zone all sit on one continuous, seamless surface that unifies the entire layout. The family told us their teenagers now prefer hanging out in the basement over going out --- which, for San Jose parents, is the ultimate endorsement.
Project 4: Fremont Master Bedroom --- Champagne Gold
Location: Niles neighborhood, Fremont Space: Master bedroom suite Size: 250 square feet Colors: Champagne gold Cost: $2,500 ($10/sqft)
The Before
This Fremont couple was renovating their master bedroom suite as part of a larger home remodel. The existing floor was carpet over concrete --- standard for many Bay Area homes built in the 1970s and 1980s. When the carpet was pulled up, the concrete underneath was in decent structural condition but cosmetically rough: carpet tack strip holes around the perimeter, scattered adhesive patches, a few hairline cracks, and the flat, uninspiring gray that makes bare concrete feel institutional rather than residential.
The couple originally planned to install hardwood but was concerned about long-term maintenance and wanted something that felt more unique. Their interior designer suggested metallic epoxy after seeing it in a San Francisco showroom.
The Transformation
Preparation was straightforward --- no major cracks or moisture issues. We filled the tack strip perimeter holes, ground the surface to remove adhesive residue, and primed the slab. The couple selected champagne gold, wanting warmth and subtle luxury without the boldness of a bright color.
The champagne metallic was poured and manipulated into soft, organic flowing patterns. Under the bedroom's warm-toned lighting, the gold pigments create a gentle, sophisticated glow that changes subtly throughout the day as natural light shifts through the windows.
The After
The master bedroom now has a floor that the couple describes as feeling like a luxury hotel suite. The champagne gold metallic catches morning sunlight through east-facing windows and glows softly under bedside lamps in the evening. It pairs beautifully with their neutral bedding and warm wood furniture. The seamless surface also eliminated the dust-trapping carpet that had been aggravating seasonal allergies. What Makes These Transformations Possible
The dramatic difference between before and after in each of these projects comes down to three factors:
Professional surface preparation. Diamond grinding, crack repair, and proper priming create the foundation for a flawless result. No amount of premium material can compensate for poor prep work. This is the primary reason professional metallic epoxy installations look nothing like DIY attempts.
High-quality metallic pigments and topcoats. Commercial-grade metallic pigments produce richer color, deeper dimension, and longer-lasting beauty than consumer-grade alternatives. Our UV-resistant topcoat protects the metallic layer and maintains gloss for 15 to 20 years or more.
Skilled installation technique. Manipulating metallic pigments is a craft that requires experience, intuition, and artistry. Our installers read the material in real time and respond to how pigments flow, interact, and settle to create patterns that look organic and intentional rather than random. For the full technical breakdown, read our step-by-step installation process guide.
